The wonderful class of 79 had a birthday/Christmas get together on Saturday, December 3. We meet at Rolling River Estates in W.N. 19 classmates on hand for hours of great stories, laughing till every muscle was aching...and tears flowing. We celebrated with Sherrie Nail Burns as she will be retiring after 34 yrs of working with the SBA in Jan 2012. Congrats to Sherrie on becoming a full time grandmother! Sherrie also had the oldest grandchild of those who were in attendance. Out little group also had 7 grandparents...some one told us we were old..since they didn't have grandchildren yet...and there was a reply of NO, the 7 grandparents just started having sex earlier! it was a good laugh :)
We all are looking forward to our next get together really soon..what a great group of life long friends we are!!

Last night was the 5th annual Cohn High School Alumni Homecoming. From what Don said this was the largest turn out...with around 300 in attendance.
The Class of 1979 had 11 classmates to come..This was our best yet.
Those who came to celebrate turning 50 this year...

Board games became more innovative, with games like Operation taking advantage of new electronic technology.

Cindy Ware-WilsonTo all my Fb family and friends, I found out today that I have breast cancer. I kind of already knew. But I haven't given up, the lord will give me strength and comfort me. I have go on the 23rd for a MRI to see if its in the other breast and in my lymph nodes. The 24th is my surgery. I have to have a mastectomy. I encourage all my female friends to have their mammograms every year. I missed 2 yrs. and now have cancer.

So Sunday, July 31st we had a great time at Wine and Easel in Cool Springs. For 3 hours we painted out one of a kind "Masterpieces" Not bad for a group who all claim to have not one ounce of talent at all. Each one is unique in it's on right. Angela and her youngest daughter Leah, Cynthia and her daughter Morgan and Debi and daughter Megan along with Sherry, Sherrie, Freda, and Lisa all came..we even had a "wanna bee" Cohn Head Debra. It was truly a great time. These get together's are great...and we have decided to keep them up way past all the big "50" birthdays are over.

Our next fun day is tentatively Saturday, August 20th at The Pottery Place at the Avenues in Murfreesbro. 10 am we will either make a glass pendent, or paint some cool pottery then eat lunch. Please if you would like to join us, come ON..we love to visit...

Yesterday, June 18th 7 of us old timers took to the streets of downtown Nashville. We had lunch at Margaritaville..after eating a wonderful lunch we hit Broadway to take in some of the many sights, and there was plenty to see. For some reason every time we plan a lunch it seems to rain...matter of fact it pours cats and dogs. But we did get lucky yesterday when the water bucket ran out and the sky cleared..I think just for us!

So our next ladies outings are as follows..
Sunday, July 31st we are going to Wine/Diet Coke and Easel "Sand and Shore" located in Cool Springs if you would like to join us please click on the red link.

Stalker or not

Ok guys..some of you have responded to the idea of a reunion cruise and some are just hiding and stalking facebook...I know that not all from our class we be able to do this, but for those of you that like the idea and would like to go along for the ride...we need to know that your interested so that when the time comes to start planing and getting the numbers together we will have the correct information.

I know that most who have responded is more interested in a 5 day cruise. I understand that a Monday-Friday would work for most. Who knows by the time the 2014 travel dates come out there might be some good prices for Thursday-Monday..We just have to wait and see. And if there is a really AWESOME rate for a 7 day..well we have to look at it too. Again what we're asking is for you to let us know if your interested and to start a "cruise fund"...I know that sounds crazy since most are stressed about just filling up the gas tank right now.

35th Class Reunion

So the Class of 79 is planning a Class reunion …yep, time to start planning for our 35th. So Travis has ask that I fill you in on the advantages of a 7 day cruise. So here goes….

First the price for a 7 day is really the better deal. Most of the time you are able to get 7 days for the price of what a 3 or 5 day cruise cost. With a 7 day cruise you have more time to relax and enjoy being away from home, work, and the “real world” Plus you have more choices in the ports of call you can visit. All the below is included in any length of your cruise.
You arrive at the ship, receive your key card and unpack for the full week. Then just sit back and enjoy all the food you could ever dream of eating.
There is a huge selection of on board activities that are included in the price of your cruise, pools, hot tubs, state of the art gym, mini golf, basket ball, and depending on the cruise line the list goes on. There also are activities that will be charged to your sale and sign card (your on board credit card) These cost are Bingo, gambling in the casino, going to the spa, golf simulators. Pictures are taken just about all day every day and you will have them to take home at the end of your cruise. If you need to stay in contact with family all ships now have internet service it does cost you a little but then what’s better than being on Facebook while at sea? Hey there all you members of the class of 79...Travis wants our class how ever many of us that can to take a 35th reunion cruise. We have have 3 years till that big date rolls up on us. So start really saving that loose change. We need to get some idea of how many would like to go and then start working on a 3, 5, or 7 day cruise. From experience you will need to have a deposit of at least $250.00 per person to hold your cabin...with the balance paid in full 90 days prior to the sail date. Services for Mike and Tina Forrest will be Tuesday, May 3 at World Outreach Church, Oneonta, Alabama. Private family viewing from 11 AM till 12 PM, funeral services will be at 2:00 PM. The family will receive guests after the funeral service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made to the Mike and Tina Forrest Memorial fund at Regions Bank.

As most of you have seen, horrific tornadoes ripped through northern Alabama Wednesday evening...and you may have, as I usually do, expressed sorrow for lives lost, and then life moves on. But, Thursday morning, my heart was crushed and and my life came to a halt as I learned that my older brother Mike, and his wife of 31 years, Tina, were killed as an F4 tornado crashed into their house as they huddled together with their 2 dogs, in the bathroom. The entire home was ripped from it's foundation and strewn into the lake down the hill behind their property in Ohatchee, Al. Mike and Tina were texting our family to let us know what was going on, and we assumed when we didn't hear from them anymore after Mike's last transmission at 6:56pm Wed., that the power was just out.

I've never known anyone in my life who was always enthusiastically resolved to see Jesus as Mike. At many family gatherings, in the midst of wonderful meals and belly laughs, Mike would say, "Wow, this is how it's going to be in heaven, and we get to do this all the time!" He tailored all of his responses and interactions with people to reflect his love of the Lord, or to give the Lord credit and glory for everything. Tina and Mike were so excited to learn about the deeper things of the Lord and to have known, in the last 5 years the power and giftings available to them through the Holy Spirit. Tina read every book she could get her hands on to learn more and more about her abundant life through Jesus and Holy Spirit.

I am so comforted to learn that Mike and Tina both had smiles on their faces as they crossed over, and that is their daughter's last view of them, on this earth. I can hear Mike chuckling, "Haha, I'm so glad to be out of that shell of a body!" It gives me peace to talk to Jessica, their daughter, (my first, "sweet baby.") and to hear hope in her voice, and to feel the bubble of grace around her as she walks a difficult road for a 28 year old. Her husband, James, and his family have stepped up beautifully these last 24 hours. Their daughter, Ariel, who is 5, was the apple of Mike and Tina's eye, and she will wonder in days to come why she can't see Papa and Nana anymore.

Of utmost importance to me is Mike and Tina's son, Blake. He as been deployed for 9 months, the last 3 being in Afghanistan with the marines. Mike and Tina had bought him a new truck, and were welcoming him home next Friday May 6th, in North Carolina for Mother's Day weekend. We are waiting to hear when he will be flown home, to Birmingham. He will come home to no parents and no belongings. His dog, Cuz, was found wondering around, yesterday, and Jessica's in-laws will keep him for Blake.

My Mom is doing remarkable well, as she trudges through waves of emotion at different moments. My sister, Millie is

flying in from Wisconsin, this afternoon, and all of her children are making their way here in the next couple of days from Colorado, California, and Wisconsin. Uncle Mike loved to tease all of them. My brother Steve is dealing with the new, "man of the family," title, with grace and humility, and much sooner than he ever planned. He and his wife, Kathryn, are in Alabama today, with Jessica, working out details, and meeting with funeral home staff.

Anyone who was a friend to Mike, through Facebook, knew of his amazing sense of humor...unmatched, corny, and hilarious. As they prepared for the impending storms, Mike posted that it looked like they might be going to visit the land of Oz this afternoon...and as the tornado was upon them he mentioned the wind stopping, and in the eye of the storm, two of his last posted comments were of his trust in the Lord: "Thanks. Jesus is callin' the shots-AMEN! ;<) We have angels to protect us, or usher us into heaven. HA! No fear here!"; "If I drop off line...either our power has gone off, or I'm with the ONE who holds all the POWER ;<)" Mike and Tina would want their testimony to be of their total dependence, love, and desire for each of us to know the One who loves more than life itself, and that life is always and only worth living, when we know, trust, and depend on Jesus Christ.

Thank you so much to my awesome beautiful friends and family for the most comforting, unbelievable outpouring of love, and prayers...it's the body of Christ, the way it's supposed to be, and I am undone as a recipient of your heart-felt extensions of God toward me and my family. This is a trauma, but not a devastation. A sadness, but not without comfort because of a love that is unfathomable and immeasurable. Jesus has a good track record with me of His faithfulness, and it won't waiver.

Neighbors and friends remember Michael and Tina Forrest as a lively, happy pair who worked hard and loved God.

“They were two of the most incredible people you will ever meet,” Gadsden resident Gina Coggins said Thursday as she stood next to the cinderblock foundation of her friends’ old home — the only part of the structure still intact.

They moved from Hoover to their lakeside home on Neely Henry Lake in Ohatchee a year ago.

The Forrests’ neighbors — Kim and Mark Thompson — also recalled the couple’s dedication to the Christian faith and their hardworking ways.

Mike Forrest was the kind of neighbor who always said hello, Mark Thompson said, the kind of guy who waved when he saw you.

Mike Forrest worked long hours at a Publix grocery store in Birmingham, Coggins added. But his first love was graphic design, she remembered. Before the economy went sour, Mike helped design pages for a contracting company with Southern Living Magazine.

The Forrests leave behind a daughter who works in Birmingham and a younger son, stationed as a Marine in Afghanistan, Alabama Deputy Fire Marshal Tommy Wiggonton said.

Coggins attended church with the Forrests at the World Outreach Center in Oneonta, and Tina Forrest worked as a paralegal at Coggins’ Gadsden law firm.

“Tina and I left the office together yesterday. We walked out together at the same time, saying we were going to go home and take cover,” Coggins said through tears. “And she did; they posted on Facebook later that they were hunkered down in their house with a pot of coffee. They were two of the most wonderful people.”

Tina Forrest, 49, was found dead under a tree near the banks of Neely Henry Lake Thursday morning.

First responders had pulled Mike Forrest from the lake sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday morning. Forrest was alive when emergency workers found him, but he died from his extensive injuries at a hospital in Gadsden Thursday morning, Wiggonton said.

Tina had spent much of her free time in recent days talking about how excited she was her son, Blake, was coming home from Afghanistan at the beginning of May, Coggins said. Tina planned to drive to Camp LeJeune in North Carolina next week, just so she could be the first person to hug her son, who’s been gone since last summer.

“They were the best neighbors,” Kim Thompson said. “And now they’re gone and we’ve lost everything, too.”

The Thompson’s mobile home was also destroyed in the storm, along with five other homes along the Eagle Cove Road stretch that overlooks Lake Neely Henry.

Jessica Peterson, the Forrests’ daughter, cried when she arrived to see the wreckage that used to be her parents’ home. As she scoured the debris, searching for a photo album, a family Bible, a muddy picture of her brother in uniform, Coggins looked on, tears rimming her eyes.

“This is so hard. I just can’t believe it,” Coggins said. “The last thing they posted on Facebook was, ‘It’s headed our way. We’ve got angels to protect us or angels to usher us into heaven. No fear.’ Yes, that was them.”

April 27, 2011, Ohatchee AL in Calhoun County Live Tina Summers and Mike Forrest. They live in a small ranch home with a lake across the street. Tina loved living in the country. She was a wonderful cook and was always making breads and jams..The simple things of life..just plant it, it will grow and then you can it, freeze and eat all winter long.
In the past few month Tina had redone her kitchen. From stripping the cabinets and painting them. The walls, country tops it wall was posted step by step on Facebook. All was finished and she was so proud of her work. Just last week she had made Ariel a pillow case dress..oh how she loved that little girl.
Tina was able to speak to Blake last weekend, Blake is serving in Afghanistan and was due to be home soon. Jessica lives in Birmingham not far away.
My heart is breaking for Blake, Jessica and all the other family left behind...I hold in my heart that there is a reason for all things, and it's not my to ask why..God had other plans for Mike and Tina...
Please hold them and the family in your hearts and prayers..

Announcing the Over the Hill women of 79

So since most of the women of the class of 1979 has just turned 50 or will be turning 50 this year...what would be better than to have 4 birthday parties...
Our first party will be Saturday, March 5th. We will be meeting at Logan's Road House at 100 Oaks for a late lunch..then who know what we might get into..

Our 2nd party of the year will be in June...after looking at the calendar looks like Saturday, June 18th might be the date..We are going to plan on taking the Nashville Trash Tour. The time of this tour would be 2 pm with a cost of $32.00 + per person..it's a 90 minute tour of Down Town Nashville...So be thinking if this sounds like something you want to do..Click here for all the information.

Then our next party will be in September and again in December..sounds like lots of great girl fun...

Alleviate class reunion anxiety by planning ahead: map out pre-event beauty treatments, shop early, get the hairdo down weeks ahead and go the "less is more" route with fashion.

Little Black Dress

It was a Friday night, Homecoming...per my memory book..it was a very cold night.
The game was Cohn High Black Knights vs Stratford High Spartans the final score...Cohn 7, Stratford 20...So now we know the score from our senior homecoming football game...we lost...

Our class had 4 member at the Homecoming Alumni BBQ tonight at Cohn High School. There was a LARGE turn out...or at least Cynthia and I thought so. Now we were on a mission of getting the word out to all the other classes about the Friday night reunion party at Graham Central Station. Cynthia printed 100 flyer's to pass out....So I think we got the Alumni covered almost.

It was great to see how nice the alumni center has turned out. There a great collection on things on display from all the classes. Angela donated her old majorette uniform, some cheer leading things...Cynthia has her flag that is going to have a home there. I think Jeff Smith is going to find his old football helmet and donate it. If there is anything that any of you still have and would like to donate just shot Yvonne Evens a email @ vonn10ec@aol.com

I wish now that I had taken more pictures...but didn't. Outside going up the stairs to the gym, if you remember there is a block wall...I told Cynthia no way is there any graffiti from our days...well I was wrong! up at the top on the left side, there was Terry Pruitt's name and many more that has not been touched in over 30 years...how cool is that? I'm going to have to make a trip back with full day light to take pictures of this...

Class of 78, the Passing of Terry Soapes

MYATT, Terry Ann Soapes Age 49, Nashville. After 6 years of battling cancer, Terry went to be with the Lord on September 19, 2009. Preceded in death by her father, James Soapes. Survived by her husband of 30 years, Andy Myatt; daughters, Mandi (Robert) Nix and Bridget (Troy) Anderson; grandchildren, Breanna Nix and Troy Anderson III; mother, Beulah Soapes. A special thanks to the following and their wonderful staff for their caring and support of Terry, Alive Hospice, Dr. James D. Bryant, Dr. Mike Magee, Dr. John Greer, Jeannie Knight, Bill Wise and many other family and friends. Terry was employed with CNA Insurance for 26 years before her illness. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at West Harpeth Funeral Home with Pastor Walter Reid and Pastor Jonathan Lail officiating. On Friday, October 2nd at 6:00 p.m. all classes of Cohn High School will be getting together for an alumni BBQ. Many changes have taken place recently and a new Alumni Center has been unveiled. You have to see it to really appreciate it!

This BBQ will serve as a chance to reunite with former classmates from every graduating class and to raise money for the new Alumni Center. Therefore there is a $15 per person charge to cover the food and funds for the Alumni Association. We need an accurate headcount so please RSVP.

The library at the Hall of Fame is where great minds gather to research, using the vast resources available on subjects both cultural and musical. It also happens to boast the opportunity to look out over the Nashville skyline from the fourth story of the building. Warm, cherry wood walls are offset by floor-to-ceiling windows that soar up 25-feet. Flooded by natural light during the day, the library is even more dramatic at night when the soft glow of light is enhanced by the city-scape outside. It may seem hard to imagine that such an open and airy space can feel just as cozy as a family room, but that’s exactly what the library offers.

Travis has worked diligently to find the perfect venue to celebrate our 30th class reunion.
We also will have a multi class casual together on Friday the 6th, at Graham Central Station on 2nd Avenue. This activity is free of charge. Come and visit with class mates, while enjoying the private room at Graham Central Station. Entertainment will be provided by our very own classmates Steve, Randy, and Terry’s band "Caught Looking Back", aka the Burning Bold Spots. You may remember this classic rock band from our 25th reunion.

We meet tonight at Logans with Angela, Cynthia, Kay, Debi, Cookie, Robbie, and Travis in attendance.

Here is what we have come up with so far;

Our next meeting will be Saturday, August 22. We are to meet at 4:00 at Rippy's downtown. Travis is working that day and he said we can park at the fire station. Travis will have several options for us to look at. We will visit several places then sit down and decide where we will have the reunion. Anyone who would like to come help in the decision making is welcome. Try to keep up with who says they will be there.

Visitation for Linda Temple

The arrangement for Linda Temple (as of right now) are:

The visitation will be Wednesday night from 6:30 until 8:00 pm at Barth Vernon United Methodist Church. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:30, also at the church.

The church is located at the corner of Waco & Robertson Rd.

Cheryl has received calls, e-mail and sympathies and appreciates each and everyone one of them. She is physically and emotionally unable to return them at this time.

Just to let you know that Linda (Cantrell) Temple died this morning. She was in the class of 1979 and married Ricky Temple. She is the sister of Cheryl (Hatfield) Ballesteros, Ronnie and Tommy Hatfield.

We had our first planning meeting tonight at the Varsity Grill.
Gordon, Travis, Cookie, Steve, Kay, Cynthia, Angela and I were on hand to try and come up with a plan....
So we have a date of Saturday, November 7, 2009...unknown location. Gordon and Travis are going to be checking on options over the next 2 weeks.
We also will be meeting again Thursday, July 30th at Logan's Roadhouse on Elliston Place. 6-6:30 PM Please feel free to come and bring any names, phone numbers, addresses you might have.
